I didn't major in Political Science or set out to have a career in politics. I am running because for too long I've been saying "someone needs to do something." I am someone; you are too! It's time to demand more from our elected officials. At the very least, it's time to demand that our elected officials do what they say and say what they do.I am running because I believe in the power of community and the importance of effective leadership. I am and have been, for over twenty years, a practicing attorney in Burlington, Iowa. I am a lifelong Iowan.I have seen firsthand the challenges our community faces. I am an advocate for the return of Iowa to being a national leader in education. I believe in the importance of the recruitment and retention of young people and professionals to our state and bringing back a strong rural economy. I am concerned about the health of Iowans, and the importance of access to good healthcare. I believe in equality for all citizens of our great state and "Iowa nice." The potential for positive change also inspires me, and I know that by working together, we can create a brighter future for our community, city, and our fantastic state.&nbsp;I grew up on a small farm right here in Iowa. I am one of two children. My parents still live on that same farm, and I am proud to be a native Iowan. I grew up here, went to school here, and own a business here. I am one of you, and I am proud of that! My parents have instilled in me the importance of a good education, a strong work ethic and a moral obligation to our friends and neighbors.I graduated from East Buchanan High School in Winthrop Iowa in 1998. I went on to the University of Iowa where I graduated with Honors in Communication Studies and International Business (certificate) in December of 2001. Then, I obtained my Juris Doctorate at the University of Iowa Law School in December of 2004. In January of 2005, I moved to Burlington, Iowa, and have been practicing law here ever since, first at Beckman &amp; Hirsch and, since 2008, with Robberts &amp; Kirkman, LLLP. We are a general practice law firm which practices in family law, estate law, and guardianships/conservatorships. In my professional life, I see first-hand the challenges that face Iowans right at their kitchen table, every day.I am fortunate enough to be the mother to a truly remarkable teenager and the fiancé to a health care provider at Community Health Center in Southeast Iowa.Over my 20+ years of owning a small business in Burlington, Iowa, and living and working here, I have volunteered with a number of organizations, including the Burlington Library Board, Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra, Burlington Fine Arts League, Rotary, BTown Pride, Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce, Burlington Notre Dame Foundation, Business and Professional Women, and Burlington Riverfront Entertainment, to name a few.I am committed to listening to the voices of all community members. Working together allows us to find creative solutions to even the most complex challenges. I have worked as an advocate my entire career, and I will use that experience to help us move District 99 into the future while we celebrate and learn from the past.&nbsp;I ask for your support and vote, and I promise to work tirelessly to represent your interests and make our community a better place for all of us.&nbsp;Thank you, and please accept my gratitude for your time.

Every Iowan deserves the dignity and respect to live and work in our great state of Iowa as productive members of our community. OneiowaAction reported no less than 26 bills introduced at the 2025 legislative session which in some way targets already disenfranchised or marginalized Iowans. Some of these bills also included threats to our educational system and our libraries, interference with parental autonomy, and one proposed criminalizing homelessness.In February, Iowa became first in the nation to remove gender identity from the Iowa Civil Rights Act (which had been in effect since 2007) with language that enshrines "separate but equal." This made national news.Iowa needs to find its way back to focusing on the real challenges before us, like attraction and retention of young people and professionals, creating a strong robust economy, being a leader in education and doing what Iowans do best, creating community and caring for our friends and neighbors.Legislating exclusion is not the Iowa I believe in. At a minimum, I challenge all voters, how much of your taxpayer dollars do you want spent on advocating these bills? We have bigger fish to fry folks!

Iowa as a leader in Education?Iowa’s history of excellence in education meant that small towns and rural Iowa communities were full of opportunities for people. Education meant jobs and opportunity.&nbsp; Iowa traditionally consistently ranked as one of the top 5 states in the nation for quality education.&nbsp; We are at #27 presently for Pre-k-12 (US News and World Report).&nbsp; With public money funneling out of public education (School Vouchers or Education Savings Accounts), the gutting of AEA, teacher raises failing to keep up with inflation, and teacher shortages, we have work to do! We need to return our educational system to being a national leader and return to our roots.Part of that mission has to be the improving the public educational system with public funding for the benefit of all Iowan school children.Returning collective bargaining power to teachers, improving wages and working conditions to recruit more teachers to combat our teacher shortage, eliminating the flow of public funds out of public schools, Auditor oversight for the expenditures of public funding, and returning AEA services are some of the steps we need to take.

Restoring Strong Public Schools

Rural economies are struggling. In Southeast Iowa we have seen the exodus of lucrative manufacturing and other industries, without adequate replacement businesses. Job opportunities must be attracted and retained.U.S. News and World Report lists Iowa as 44th in the nation as far as overall economy and 49th in terms of economic growth for 2025. This is a trend that cannot continue. While economic growth is a multi-faceted issue, it demands the time and attention of the legislature to find solutions.It is of vital importance that we return Iowa to a place known for being "a great place to raise a family." Where people are drawn to our great schools, friendly safe environment ("Iowa Nice") and general overall good quality of life. Our economic future is linked to other areas of my focus.

Bolstering the Economy

Iowa is home; where we all live and work and raise our families. We all have an interest in our own health and access to health care providers. We have a moral obligation to our friends and neighbors. We and our families are all one significant life change or illness away from our daily lives being forever changed.A recent Iowa Cancer report released in February 2025 reports that Iowa has the second highest and fastest rising cancer rate (new cancer) across all age groups in the nation. This is alarming information.Additionally, the Iowa Medical Society recently reported a physician workforce shortage crisis like never before, where Iowa is ranked 44th in the nation as far as patient to physician ratio per 100,000 (30% worse than the national average). Iowa also ranks last nationally for OB-GYNs per capita, with 3.3 providers per 10,000 women (national average is 4.5). We need to recruit and retain qualified providers to our area.We need to eliminate legislative actions and proposed legislation which make it undesirable for health care providers to come to our great state of Iowa.We need to invest time and research, in a real way, into finding the root causes of our rising cancer rates and solutions to the issues we are already aware of in our water quality.
